Methods for Setting up a VPN on Roku
Roku devices do not have native support for VPNs. As a result, if you want to connect your Roku device to a VPN, you will have to install it first on your router. You can do this through two methods:

Physical Router Method
If you want to install a VPN on physical router, you will need a custom firmware that supports VPN installation. DD-WRT is one of the most popular firmware.
The process of installing a VPN on a DD-WRT is quite technical. I would not recommend this method because this is very technical.
- First, open DD-WRT Administrative Interface and visit Setup then visit Basic Setup
- Then, enter the following DNS address under Network Address Server Settings:
- Static DNS 1 = 103.86.96.100
- Static DNS 2 = 103.86.99.100
- Static DNS 3 = 0.0.0.0 (Default)
- Use DNSMasq for DHCP = Checked
- Use DNSMasq for DNS = Checked
- DHCP-Authoritative = Checked
- Click on Save and Apply settings
- Now open Setup then click IPv6 and disable it, the press Save & Apply button
- Navigate to Service option then VPN and set Start OpenVPN Client = Enable under OpenVPN Client
Note: Enter your username and password and enter a server IP/Name depending on your choice.
- Copy and Paste the following commands in the Additional Config field:
- remote-cert-tls server
- remote-random
- nobind
- tun-mtu 1500
- tun-mtu-extra 32
- mssfix 1450
- persist-key
- persist-tun
- ping-timer-rem
- reneg-sec 0
- #log /tmp/vpn.log
- #auth-user-pass /tmp/openvpncl/user.conf
- Now download TLS and CA certificates from your provider’s official website
- Unzip the downloaded file and open servers folder
- Open the CA.crt file of the server address you entered
- Copy and Paste the all of this text (from —-BEGIN CERTIFICATE—– to —–END CERTIFICATE—–) in the CA Cert field
- Open the TLS.key file with Notepad
- Now paste all of text in the TLS Auth Key field box
- Click Save and Apply Settings
Virtual Router Method
In this method, you can turn your PC and Mac into virtual routers that your Roku can share a VPN connection with.
Setting up a VPN on Roku via Shared PC Internet Connection
- First, install a VPN on your system
- Click on the taskbar and click “Open Network Internet Settings“
- Now select “Change adapter settings“
- Find your VPN in the list and right click it to open “Properties”
- On the Sharing tab check mark on “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection“
- Now you can use your system as a virtual router
- Now you can connect your Roku device to your system’s Wi-Fi hotspot
